College Football: Catching Up the Future

College Football: Catching Up the Future

By Alex Rea

As the thirteenth week of college football approaches, multiple teams have had a season’s worth of recognition.

Locally speaking, the Colorado State Rams have climbed their way up the rankings with an impressive 9-1 season. With newly acquired running back Dee Hart, the Alabama transfer, the Rams have created a versatile offense, quarterback Garrett Grayson has added to Hart’s running abilities, with an exclusive air attack. The Rams, for the most part, have dominated their opponents this season, with an exception to their only loss coming from Boise State. The Rams’ outstanding season will more than likely earn them a bowl appearance, and has them already ranked No. 22 in the country, by the Associated Press poll. The Colorado Buffaloes have had the exact opposite season compared to the Rams. Losing their last six games, a prominent season was lost in sight since the start of the year. Their next game on the schedule against the Oregon Ducks should not be worth the watch. Oregon has a high caliber offense and  a serious punch at the quarterback position with Marcus Mariota, a big time contestant in the Heisman Trophy race. This all adds up to an early blowout for the Buffs and their possible ninth loss of the season. From a national standpoint, the biggest annual headline was the success of the No.1 Mississippi State Bulldogs. Early on in the year they looked virtually unbeatable, blowing out Auburn and Texas A&M. On Nov. 15, they finally lost their unblemished record with a loss to No.5 Alabama. Now switching places, with Alabama taking No.2 and the Bulldogs falling down to No.4, they could meet again this season in the SEC or national championship. The defending national champions Florida State Seminoles have kept their reign intact. With no losses on the season, the Seminoles have really left no room for doubters, sitting at No.3 in the country. Top-ten quarterback Jameis Winston, hasn’t impressed many with his play but continues to win, so that’s all that matters. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out, with all the of the possible contenders in the new College Football Playoff system. This system was freshly instituted this year, allowing the top four teams in the country to play in a separate playoff bracket. The biggest off-the-field headline has to be Georgia running back Todd Gurley and his suspension and later season-ending injury. Predicted frontrunner for the Heisman trophy, Gurley had high hopes for this year, but they were quickly interrupted when he was caught selling autographs to fans, which violated the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)’s strict rules regarding the selling of memorabilia. Gurley received a four game suspension for his actions. During his first game back on Nov. 15, he tore his ACL, ending his season indefinitely. The remaining weeks of the college season could present loads of excitement. College football doesn’t receive the same interest has its big brother, the National Football League but still has a lot of possible fun due to the amount of bowl spots teams are fighting for.
