Having a group of kids working on robots for an hour seems like a total waste of time, right?

Especially if they can’t put it to use. But, Wheat Ridge High has built many little bots and showed them off at the Colorado Tech Student Association and State Leadership Expo, at the beginning of February, 2016. The event had gone on inside of the Denver Tech Center, along with 30-40 other schools, with 800 kids participating in multiple activities. Thirteen kids from Wheat Ridge high school had built products that were a part of CNC production, manufacturing prototypes, and even a rubber band powered car.

After a couple days over in the Tech Center, the kids from Wheat Ridge had won first place in ‘‘System Control Technology’’ and third place in “Manufacturing Prototypes.” Physics and robotics teacher Ron Livingston said, “Time management on some of the projects would have helped a lot with winning some of the tournaments.”

Ben Milek, sophomore, said that, “If our skills could have been more experienced, then we probably could have won or done better.”

One thing that everyone in Robotics was disappointed in was that in one of the events, they got booted from first place to dead last because what Livingston described as “rule changes.” Instead of shooting one ball at a time, the machine they built and set off had shot multiple balls at a time, making their robotic material fall to the bottom.

The participants really enjoyed talking about the achievements they got and just looking back on those couple days. Hearing about your school entering and winning first place in events at an association and expo makes the teachers, like Livingston and all the kids in the class, like Jake Michel and Hannah Livingston, really seem to be learning something new and having fun. Whatever they are building for the next expo, hopefully, they’ll bring back a gold medal for Wheat Ridge High.
