“So Fresh, So Clean”…Really?

Every year Wheat Ridge seniors nominate songs, mottos, colors, and flowers that best represent them as a class.

These are nominated during the first class meeting of the year and then voted on during senior English classes. This year, like every other year since I have been a Farmer, the senior class did not take it seriously. Some choices included Pepsi blue and Mountain Dew yellow for the colors and “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus for the song. The class song voted in is “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by the Beach Boys, the flower picked is the Tiger Lily, the colors are sky blue and sunshine yellow and the motto is “So fresh, so clean, class of 2014.” Something not many people know is that the administration has to approve of each category. This year “My Humps” by The Black Eyed Peas was the actual number-one pick for the class song but was not approved by administration due to suggestive lyrics.

I am really happy with the class flower and colors. However, I do not think the motto and the song represent our class at all. In my honest opinion, the “motto,” is more like a slogan than a real motto. I’m not sure if the motto above is even the right one (the wording of the second part is either “we’re the class of 2014” or “the class of 2014”), and, frankly, I think it makes us sound like a class full of cheap laundry detergent. The song may be super catchy but it isn’t a song of our generation even, and it doesn’t give us that feeling of the future. “Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older?” I’m pretty sure that our class would rather be “Forever Young.”

A motto is supposed to be inspiring and have meaning to it. Finding one might also be one of the easiest things to do. You could seriously Google “senior class mottos” and find plenty of mottos much better than the one we have. I think that a better motto would be something like the one I found online: “Someday our dreams will take us to the heights we wish to fly, for only we have the power to make our dreams come true.”
All seniors have their own opinions of what will represent our senior class. Spencer Casey said, “I think that they’re not a good representation of our true class, people should vote seriously and make real suggestions.”

Kimberly Cessar thought that what was chosen were the best options given. She stated, “I think if we had more time, decisions made would have been better.”

Erika Porras had a different opinion as well. “Personally I don’t like the song; it isn’t truly reminiscent of our class as a whole. However, the flower and colors are inspiring and tie in well with the motto,” said Porras.

Josh Borga really liked the song and the flower, but disliked the motto because “It sounds fake to me.”
Overall it’s just another thing for the senior class to treat like a joke. I would like to honestly see the students coming together and deciding on something we could all agree represents the Wheat Ridge Class of 2014.
