Wheat Ridge High School now has the opportunity to have a chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The purpose of this club is to gather students who have common interests to build relationships and strengthen their faith.

There aren’t many opportunities to talk in school about your faith. This club gets students with similar interests who love sports and share common aspects of their faith.

“We start out with games to get to know everyone and to just ease everyone. There are always donuts in the mornings which are the best!” said member Leah Hensley, a junior. “But then we settle down, we have bible study, and we get serious and learn about God, which it is all about.”

This club began as assistant principal Ken Trager was trying to initiate it at the beginning of the school year. It has gradually started developing. Now club members meet in the team room once every two weeks on Thursdays at 8 am.

Senior Shay Pendleton is one of the club leaders and is in charge of sending Facebook posts every time the club will have a meeting.

“Students showed interest in this club, this is why WRHS took this club,” Trager said.

David Boggs, another club leader said, “I was interested in this club mainly because the name really fits both of me. Generally, both aspects of my life” He currently is on the cross country, tennis, and track and field teams.

The club is a student led club. And although it is a student led club, Kyle Mack is the adult leader and is employed by FCA. He is responsible for the club and does most of the FCA  for many of the high schools in Jeffco schools.

FCA is an international organization which challenges coaches and athletes by discussing character and leadership in relationship to their faith.

This club’s intention is to send a good message about how one should act when playing sports, but you don’t have to be an athlete to join. For example instead of managing actions in sports one should focus on it as tying one’s faith into their academics.

“Even if you haven’t heard about God, you can come check it out. It’s honestly super fun, super laid back. Definitely come; it’s such a great experience and learning about it and learning about God is just so wonderful,” said Pendleton. Pendleton really recommends anyone who might have an interest in this idea to join the FCA club here at WRHS.

If you are interested, go join the group on Facebook at FCA WRHS (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) to follow up on their activities. They definitely welcome walk-ins, and there is no RSVP required.
