The game began to slow down when Columbine started a comeback, and the first half ended with the score 10-4 Columbine. However, this score did not last long as Wheat Ridge made back-to-back shots at the beginning of the second half helping bring them close to a tie.

First, senior Amy Gillette passed to senior Gianna Ossello for the first goal of the second half. Then Ossello passed to junior Amanda Malecki for the second goal. Ossello’s distant power shot with 17:10 left in the half was good for Wheat Ridge’s 8th goal and many more shots occurred bringing the score up to 13-11 Columbine. With competition on the rise, junior Ryan Pierce, received a two-minute penalty.

Then right after Columbine pushed Ossello, giving them a yellow card as well. Suspense was building as the Farmers made two more goals tying the game up at 13-13, one by senior Alyssa Wimberly passing to Malecki and the other a field charge by Ossello.

Finally, the game was winding down with 17 seconds left as Columbine senior Maggie Burns hit Ossello giving Rebels a second yellow card. However, this did not stop Ossello as she passed the ball to Pierce who then scored the winning goal. To top that off, Columbine’s coach became a bit feisty with the refs giving them another yellow card at the last four seconds of the game.

A week prior to this game, the girls lost to Golden. They began this game with a strong lead, but slowly lost it with an ending score of 19-14. However, with hard work the girls didn’t give up the game too badly and even though they did lose the Farmers came back in the two games that followed: the first a blowout against Conifer with a killer score of 20-5 and then the comeback against Columbine.

“Although our roster isn’t full of advanced players, our team includes girls who are dedicated and work hard to become the best players they can be,” says junior Ryan Pierce. “This year, we are also blessed with some of the best coaches who care, not only for our lacrosse careers, but our overall lives, which makes our team feel more like a family.”
