Wheat Ridge High School has been best known not only their academics, but also their sports.
From freshman year to senior year, kids have been playing football, soccer, lacrosse, and many others. But, there has been word roaming through the halls that Wheat Ridge might be getting its hockey team back.
Brendan Jordan, a freshman, is one of the leaders of the group of boys who have been planning on getting the team back on its feet. “We’re all very passionate about the sport, and when we heard about the old team, it sprung a spark in us and we wanted it back.” says Jordan. He and three other boys had gotten everything done, including how to get the team back, such as contacting coaches, finding a team contact, and planning on how to get it out there to the public. Starting in 2003, math teacher Mike Schmidt, was the coach of the team. Wheat Ridge’s hockey team was a split with Arvada West at the time and within the next year, 2004, 12 freshmen that played hockey came in, and decided to make an all Wheat Ridge team. The team consisted of twelve freshmen plus players from Faith Christian and Jefferson Academy. Schmidt had coached for four years until there were hardly any hockey players left in the school. With no more implex, they had to disband the team. “We were probably number one in the state,” says Schmidt. “I’m excited to hear that the team may be coming back.”
The freshman group, consisting of Kai Degraff, Nick Tricarico, Max Gauger, leader of the plan, and Brendan Jordan have been looking and hoping to find a team contact and to start the team soon. Since the team isn’t completely filled with every position and contact, they are planning on making it more of a club team and letting boys who are from other schools that don’t offer the sport and are home-schooled join the team if desired.
