Steam Shines in the Community

By Nik Schnebly

The steam team is Wheat ridge’s foremost group on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math, and they have been busy this year creating a piece of community art.

This year, STEAM has created a sculpture inspired by Freddie Steinmark, the tree of life and hand of hope entitled Rooted in Hope. The course’s teacher, Andy Yutzy, described this year’s work as a “Crazy whirlwind year” with a lot of experiences as unique as the class itself.

Yutzy praised the course for teaching real-world experiences that  is seldom seen high school course.

STEAM teaches things like how to complete a project together and fosters interactions between students and people outside of the school. While the program is new, it shows promise and what is most exciting to Yutzy is that this is introducing a new course that will be unique to Jefferson County that offers a something different than anything else in jeffco.

STEAM was officially recognized by the city of Wheat Ridge this year as a valuable contributor to the community and will be putting their sculpture somewhere within the city limits.
