This season of Glee has been both innovative and shocking; it has been a season of good songs, emotional storylines, jealousy, high school insecurities and all new awe-inspiring guest stars such as Demi Lovato (Dani) and Adam Lambert (Star Child/Elliott Gilbert).
Although the show went through many changes viewers had reminders of what used to be as beloved guest stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow (Holly Holliday), Kristin Chenoweth (April Rhodes), Mike O’Malley (Burt Hummel), and most of the show’s original characters returned to the choir room. Season five of Glee was a season unlike any other in the shows five year history.
The beginning of season five took place during the remainder of the 2013 school year that was started in season four. The school year ended directly after the shows unforgettable 100th episode. Creatively titled “100”, the episode featured all of the original characters, including a few flashbacks and voice overs of Finn Hudson, the late Cory Monteith’s former character.
From there on, the characters of Glee relocated to New York, where the show will remain for the rest of the show’s six season span. In New York City, the rest of the characters on the show will go to school, except for Rachel, who has unexpectedly dropped out of New York Academy for the Dramatic Arts (NYADA) to uninterruptedly focus on her Funny Girl career, which may be ending here shortly with Rachel having an offer much like the one Lea Michele had when Ryan Murphy created Glee just for Michele to play the lead.
The show will focus not only on the characters’ careers, which are slowly but surely taking off, but their relationships as well. The show has focused a lot on the relationship between Kurt and Blaine which is tested as Blaine is going further and further into his career, as well as the newly rekindled flame between Sam and Mercedes which was a little rocky wit insecurities that Mercedes was having with the racial difference and Sam’s past love life. As for romance with Rachel, the show does bring up her deceased love interest and off again on again fiancé Finn occasionally but Rachel’s love life is a little cloudy.
“The Quarterback” (Episode 3 of this season) was a very tear jerking and emotional episode as it dealt with the passing of star Corey Monteith and character Finn Hudson. It was also the season’s most watched episode. When originally aired, the episode was viewed by 7.40 million Americans— the show’s highest rating since the season fourth episode “Britney 2.0”. This episode included songs such as Seasons of Love, I’ll Stand by You, Fire and Rain, If I Die Young, No Surrender, and Make You Feel My Love.
The show still has a lot of loose story lines to tie up. There are many songs to be sung, but Glee is definitely headed in a new direction seeing as this season was pretty much the transition season. With the disbanding of glee club and the missing characters the show will be very different from here on out. If you want to know any more than that, or simply enjoy a pretty good season of Glee you should definitely watch season five for yourself.
