“It’s about more than winning”, one may read on of of the many My All-American posters that speckle the school walls.
The pride among the staff about Wheat Ridge alumni Freddie Steinmark is ubiquitous, and they are excited about the new movie coming out about former Wheat Ridge running back named “My All-American”. The movie is a major studio release coming out on November 13th, and includes star Aaron Eckhart.
Despite the fact that the Wheat Ridge staff is incredibly proud of the film, many students may not know what it entails. It tells the story of Freddie Steinmark, a Wheat Ridge student during the 1960’s, who despite his small size found a place on the football team at the University Texas. He was a star on the team, but shortly after a legendary game he found out that he had a tumor on his leg. This biopic will depict his perseverance and journey to the top.
“Freddie Joe Steinmark” was the safety for University of Texas team, the Longhorns. Two days after playing in the historic “Game of the Century”, Freddie was diagnosed with malignant cancer. The cancer eventually led to the amputation of his left leg at the knee. Despite the grievous surgery, Freddie made a miraculous appearance at the Longhorns game against Notre Dame a mere 20 days after the surgery.
To celebrate the life of Freddie Steinmark, the homecoming game is themed in his honor and will take place on October 1. An Evening with Freddie is an event that the school is putting on, selling tickets for 20 dollars and will include a copy of the book “Freddie Steinmark: Faith, Family, Football”.
