There are so many genres of movies you probably have never heard of. Of course there’s horror, comedy, fantasy, drama, mystery but have you heard of Necrorealism, Bizarro, Parkour, Neo Noir etc. Furthermore, these genres are only 4 of many unknown genres. Movies in these genres are not as well known, and I want to open your eyes to the world of movies and shows you’ve never heard of!
Necrorealism, this genre isn’t exactly for the faint of heart but if you’re totally into morbid themes, you might like this one. The post-revolutionary genre, inspired by the Russian art movement of the 80s and established by a group led by filmmaker Yevgeny Yufit, follows themes of death and decay.
It focuses on black humor and often absurd topics. But if you’re into the world of serial killers, horror movies, and mysteries, this might be a genre worth exploring. Some films of this genre include Werewolf-Orderlies from 1984 and Suicide Warthogs from 1988. I personally have never heard of movies in this genre but I will definitely be looking into these movies.
Bizarro, there are cult films and then there are Bizarro films. If a movie doesn’t quite make the cut to be classified as cult, that means it’s too weird and classified into the territory covered by this genre.
Films like 1977’s Eraserhead and 1989’s The Iron Man are perfect examples of this genre, which, as the name suggests, covers, well, super weird topics. The idea is that they are unreal and ugly but also thought-provoking and puzzling. So it might be worth checking out if you want to be intrigued and horrified at the same time. This genre is definitely a weird but interesting genre.
You might know about parkour, which started as a way for soldiers to train with courses and compete with other soldiers. Now it’s not just parkour it’s also action and exciting. This genre is definitely my favorite out of all these genres I’m sharing. The goal is to get from one place to another as fast and as smart as possible, without using any tools. It’s all about running and jumping in a super cool way.
Movies in this genre are usually inspired by video games. The characters don’t always want to fight, but they’re really good at getting away from hard situations. Some movies that fit this parkour style are Prince of Persia (2010) and District 13 (2004). This genre is much more new with movies from 2004-2010. Personally I would include hunger games into this genre which I would totally recommend
Neo-noir is a fresh spin on the classic noir genre, keeping the gritty, dark atmosphere while adding in more modern themes and settings. It often shows characters who aren’t entirely good or bad, with complicated storylines that highlight feelings of isolation or despair.
These films dive into issues like corruption and the struggles of modern life. They often mix crime, mystery, and psychological drama, but with a contemporary twist, showing how technology, city life, and today’s problems influence people’s choices and actions.
To wrap it up, learning about lesser-known movie genres like Necrorealism, Bizarro, Parkour, and Neo-noir opens up a whole new side of movies. Each genre brings something fresh, more challenging than what we’re used to in more forward movies. Whether you’re into dark humor, intense action, or complex, moody stories, these genres have a lot to offer. If you’re looking for a new movie experience, these unique styles are definitely worth exploring. You never know, one might just become your next favorite genre!
