The Pitchfork Showdown: a rivalry between the Farmers and the Golden Demons that has been taking place for as long as most people can remember.
On Jan. 24 these two rivals went head-to-head yet again inside the gym at Golden. For the past few years, the Demons have had the Farmers’ number in basketball, and many expected this to be cruise for the Demons yet again.
However, the Farmers had different plans. The first quarter resulted in just a four point deficit due to junior Willie Harris scoring eight of the Farmers’ nine points in the quarter. A strong offensive second quarter left the halftime score at 25-31 in favor of the Demons and made for a heavily intense halftime intermission between the student sections.
The second half was an even better story for the Farmers as they climbed out of their six point hole to tie the Demons on a turn around, fade-away shot by senior Stefan Hackethal. Hackethal led the Farmers with 18 points and sent the game into overtime with his electric and improbable shot. Unfortunately, the Farmers did not get the storybook ending their underdog tale was wishing for. The Farmers did not help themselves by missing key lay ups during OT and was outscored in the extra time 12-7 for a final score of 65-60 in favor of the Demons.
Heads should be held high after such an excellent effort was put forth by the boys. Harris and Hackethal led the offensive push by adding in 15 and 18 points, respectively. Harris led the way for rebounding in the game as well with a total of 7 boards, and sophomore Nicco Young helped out with four assists.
This will not be the last you hear of the Demons in basketball this year however. The Farmers square off with their rivals again for the last game of the regular season on Feb. 21. After such an incising and close game at Golden, the Farm is sure to be rocking when these two meet up for the right to the last laugh this season.
