I’m sure most of you won’t know what I mean when I say “super cross”. So I’ll give you a little SX101 lesson.
Supercross is indoor professional dirt bike racing. There are two classes for both 450cc and 250cc engine sizes, each class consisting of 20 riders. From there, the gates drop and the race is on. The first heat race takes the top four finishers and automatically advances them into the finals. Finishers 5 through 20 go to a semi-final. The semis next take the top 5 finishers to the main. If you aren’t lucky enough to be in that bunch, then your night just got extra long because you must go to the Last Chance Qualifier, or LCQ. If you are in the LCQ and finish first through fourth, you finally made it to the main! If not, better luck next week. If you are in the main, you then are mixed in with the other class of competitors of the same division of either 450cc or 250cc.
The Main or Finals is where your real action begins, because when the gate drops it’s anyone’s race.
This season is expected to be one for the books.
Chad Reed has taken many media blows before the season has even started. Reed has suffered from rumors of retirement, being one of the oldest veterans of the sport at age 33, and not having won a race nor championship in two seasons. He finally hushed the rumors, assuring that fans on Instagram that he will indeed be racing, and that his own Two-Two motorsports team will be in full swing on Yamahas’ this year.
Reed’s nemesis on and off the track, James Stewart, is coming off of his 16 month suspension due to drugs. This should be an even matchup as both are entering the retirement age of their careers.
Red Bull KTM rider Ryan Dungey who has now teamed up with long time friend and 450 rookie, Marvin Musquin, expects the duo to do well this season. In an interview with Supercrosslive.com, Dungey believes that with him and Musquin racing against each other will be a good competition saying, “We will elevate our game, and we are both going to be pushing each other hard.”
Another competitor that the track has to fear is Ken Roczen. In this summer motocross season, number 94 took second in the overall season, constantly battling with Dungey for the number one spot. With Musquin moving up to the 450cc, many are expecting good races with three strong competitors.
The Colorado underdog, Eli Tomac, took a hard crash in the home race early in the motocross (outdoor racing) season. He is planning on coming back for the supercross season, but many have raised the question of “Will he have the same confidence on the bike?”
So whose season is it? There’s only one way to find out, let’s go racing boys!
