The season officially starts on Feb. 29th. No official preseason training is taking place over the winter, although some team members have been training together in preparation for the season.
Once the season begins they practice Monday-Friday at the Everitt tennis courts.
Last season the team had a record of 500, meaning that they had the same number of wins and losses. Record-wise they were in the middle of the league. Charles Sprague, the coach and a teacher here at Wheat Ridge, feels that Golden is the competitor closest to their level skill wise.
The team will probably have around 22 players, according to Sprague, with 11 playing on varsity. He believes that senior Nicole Ortega will be their numbe-one player this year, just as she was last year.
You need no previous experience to join tennis; the coaches will teach you the sport if you are a beginner. Last year sophomore Esperanza Quintina started without ever having played before.
“I really like it because no players get cut, and you get to try something new,” she stated, “The girls are really nice, and even though you hear that sports can have a lot of drama, I haven’t experienced any of that on the team.”
Sign up sheets for tennis are located in the main office. Any questions about the signing up can be answered by Sprague or Liz Olson in the athletic office.
This season Sprague’s goal is for, “Everyone to get better… If everyone gets a little better, then the whole team will get better.”
