Bernie Sanders at Democratic Debate

With the 2020 Presidential Election coming up next year, this year’s Democratic debates, which will elect the Democratic candidate for the election, have now been taking place for about a month now

While most of you may know about the drama between former California Attorney General Kamala Harris and former Vice President, Joe Biden, I would guess that most of you don’t have opinions about many other democratic candidates. Most likely because you haven’t heard of them, because of the media’s focus on their larger, more bombastic opponents.

One of the outliers in this group is Andrew Yang, a lawyer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He founded Venture for America, a non-profit organization that focuses on creating jobs in poverty ridden cities. While he has never been considered a politician, he has been pretty solid in the few minutes per debate he has been able to speak his mind on some of America’s biggest issues. His platform is based on climate change. This is, in my opinion, the most important issue impacting the world as we know it right now. Most experts have recently come out and said that we only have around a year to two until it becomes irreversible.

According to the New York Post, Yang has made his plan clear: giant, fold-able mirrors in space. “Space mirrors would involve launching giant fold-able mirrors into space that would deploy and reflect much of the sun’s light [away from the planet]. This method would be extremely expensive, which is why it should be investigated as a last resort,” wrote Yang.

His second most talked about action if voted president, is that he would start The Freedom Dividend, which would provide every American citizen over the age of 18, $1,000 a month or $12,000 a year, and according to him, it would help every citizen pay for the basic costs of living (rent, health care, car insurance, and education). To pay for this, Yang would demand that large scale companies (Amazon specifically) pay the taxes that they haven’t been for the last couple of years. In the last three years, they have held back almost $5 billion of combined corporate and federal taxes.  For more information, go to www.yang2020.com.

Julián Castro is the former United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Being mostly known as being the former mayor of San Antonio, Texas, he has been known to call himself the “Antidote to Trump.” He has made clear that his main goal as president would be to correct the inhumane treatment of illegal immigrants from Mexico. He has been very vocal against Trump’s plan to build a wall to keep the immigrants out.

His other plans for the country are to start government funded healthcare, to get a handle on  climate change, and to bring the U.S back into the Paris Climate Accord. “As President, I want to ensure that America’s future is one where every person gets the chance they deserve and the opportunity they need to thrive.” he has made clear on several interviews and even the first democratic primary debate. Hopefully, this helps anyone out there do some research to find some candidates that they have never heard of. Potentially, this might help find a new person that they can support, and possibly vote for if that person gets to the 2020 presidential election.
