Wheat Ridge girls basketball took on the visiting Conifer Lobos on Feb 19.

The Farmers took home a dominating win, winning 40-25 and snapping their five-game losing streak. The Farmers had amazing teamwork, passing to the open player to get them the opening shot. 

“We played as a team very well,” said senior Jillian Bergan, who was also the lead scorer of the night with 10 points. 

Despite the first points of the game coming in the first five seconds by junior Lexi Gunnufson for Conifer, they couldn’t hold off the Farmers. The Farmers would continue to go on an 11-1 run after that, leaving just over a minute left to go in the first quarter. Wheat Ridge did an amazing defensive job holding the Lobos to only five points in the first quarter. Bergen led scores in that quarter with six points!

Heading into the second quarter, it was a rough quarter for the Farmers, allowing Conifer to outscore them 11-3. The Farmers’  only points in that quarter came from a three-pointer, shot by senior  Sophie Stines. More than half of the points for Conifer in that quarter came from free throws. The top scorer for that quarter was senior  Isabella Namaksy with four points. Wheat Ridge managed to hang on to their lead, 18-16, heading into halftime. 

For the fans watching the live broadcast on the Farmers Sports Network, they got a little taste of normality watching a Wheat Ridge poms performance. Their first (recorded) halftime show of the year. Thank you, Poms!

The Farmers knew they had to turn things around if they wanted to finish on top. And they did exactly that. Senior Angelina Quezada came out and got a quick two to start the quarter strong. The Farmers didn’t allow the Lobos to score until there were only six seconds left to go in the quarter. The Farmers’ defense held strong the whole third quarter. Finishing the quarter, the Farmers outscored the Lobos 12-1, extending their lead to 30-17. Both Stines and sophomore  Ellie Uhl scored four points in the quarter. 

Wheat Ridge had their eyes on the prize heading into the fourth quarter. Quezada, again, came out and scored the first points right out of the gate of this final quarter. The Farmers went on a 6-0 scoring run to start the quarter, forcing Conifer to take a time out to sort out their game plan. After the timeout, the Lobos went on a 5-0 scoring run. But with all the efforts put into the Lobos’ final game plan, the Farmers held them to eight points in the fourth. Farmers won  40-25. 

The Farmers turned it up in the last half, outscoring the Lobos 22-9. The top scorers for the Farmers were Bergen with 10, Stines with nine, and senior  Jay Lambert had six.
