Another year, another homecoming game in the books for the Farmers.
The victim this year’s opponent happened to be the biggest rival of the Farmers: the Golden Demons. Going into the game, it appeared that the Demons had no chance of getting out with a win because they were ranked third to last in all of 4A while the Farmers were ranked in the top ten. Everyone likes a good underdog story, but here on the Farm we like to be top dogs.
The game started how everyone in the stadium probably imagined. The Farmers got out to an early lead and never looked back. It seemed that the whole school was in attendance because of the almost deafening noise. A strong offensive performance by junior Jordan Jones and senior Tanner Weakland gave the Farmers a 35-0 lead at halftime. Coming out of the half, the boys took it a little easier only adding seven more points to their score, but they wouldn’t need them. The defense held strong the whole game and did not allow the Demons to light up the scoreboard once. The final score of the game was 42-0 in favor of the Farmers.
Looking back at the box score of the game, it is no wonder the Farmers seemed invincible on the field. Jones finished the game with 78 yards rushing on 15 carries with two rushing touchdowns. Weakland and junior Dakota Koenecke helped out on the receiving end of the game with three touchdowns and about 70 yards receiving. On the defensive side of the ball, senior Matt Hegna led the way with 6 tackles and 2 sacks on the Demons. Senior Christian Ortega added in an interception as well.
Overall, the Farmers did their job and crushed the team that every Farmer loves to hate. The next matchup for the Farmers is an away game against the Montbello Warriors. The Warriors are currently 4-0 and ranked 9th in 4A while Wheat Ridge will enter with a 3-1 record and ranked 7th. Looking on paper, this game looks to have the makings for an exciting game. Let’s hope the Farmers keep up the good work and pave the road to the playoffs with a triumph over the Warriors.
